how to make sangria

How can I make a sangria that is not too sweet?

The first step is to choose a good quality, dry red wine. Don’t go for the super-cheap stuff – you’ll taste the difference. A Spanish Rioja or Tempranillo is ideal, or a Merlot or Syrah from France or California. Some people like to add a lighter white wine to the mix – a Sauvignon Blanc or a Pinot Grigio work well.

Next, gather your fruit. Traditional Sangria recipes call for orange, lemon and lime – use a mix of fresh and/or dried fruit. For a more unusual twist, try adding some diced fresh pineapple, raspberries or strawberries.

Now it’s time to add some sweetness – and this is where many people go wrong. Do NOT add sugar! honey or any other sweetener directly to the Sangria. The sugar will not dissolve and you’ll end up with a cloyingly sweet drink. Instead, soak your fruit in a liqueur such as Grand Marnier, Cointreau or Triple Sec. This will add just the right amount of sweetness. You can also add a little fruit juice – apple or white grape work well, or even some sparkling water or lemonade.

Finally, add a splash of brandy. This is optional, but it really rounds out the flavour. Serve your Sangria over ice, and enjoy!
