A family trip is not a smaller version of your Sam's run. It is more documents and slower queues.
Documents
Every traveller, including an infant, needs their own mainland travel document. If a child’s permit is expired, you do not “talk your way through Futian.” You stay on the Hong Kong side or you sort the paper first. Same if you lose one mid-trip — see lost permit.
Which crossing with a pram
Futian (Lok Ma Chau Spur Line) and Lo Wu are rail halls: lifts exist, crowds do too. Shenzhen Bay is a joint checkpoint and often kinder on space if you are already on a coach. Heung Yuen Wai is quieter and newer. Huanggang is the night option and a bus story. If you take the high-speed train from West Kowloon instead, the Shenzhen Port Office says a two-person “family” fast channel opened there on 1 July 2026 and has greatly sped up clearance for families travelling with elderly people and children. The office gives no rules on who qualifies, so ask staff at the checks. Hours belong to ImmD, not to a parenting forum.
Food and nappies
Bring more water than you think. A closed hall on a Sunday is not a supermarket. Coming back, baby formula into Hong Kong is not the old outbound 1.8 kg story — that limit was about leaving Hong Kong, not returning. Read customs for what C&ED actually taxes.

- No. The child needs their own Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao residents.
- Will the stroller go through the X-ray?
- Often you fold it and send it through like a bag. Follow the officer in front of you.
- Is Huanggang easier with a pram at night?
- It is the 24-hour road crossing. It is still a bus, not a pram-friendly MTR corridor.
