Which Shenzhen border crossing should I use?

Hong Kong has five practical road and rail crossings into Shenzhen, and which one is right depends entirely on where you're going and when. Filter below, or just read the table if you'd rather compare everything at once.

The short version

If you're not sure, Futian (Lok Ma Chau Spur Line) is the easiest first crossing to try. It hands straight off from the MTR to the Shenzhen Metro with one set of checks, and it's a five-minute walk from Futian Sam's Club. Save Huanggang for when everything else is closed, since it's the only crossing that runs all night.

Hours actually matter here

Every crossing except Huanggang closes overnight, and the closing time varies by an hour or two between them. If your day trip is running long, check your intended crossing's hours before you're on the train, because being turned back at 22:35 to find the next open port is a genuinely bad end to a Sunday.

What "crowded" really means

Lo Wu is the oldest crossing and it shows. Sunday evenings between about 5pm and 8pm, when everyone who went up for the day is coming back at once, queues there can run past half an hour. Futian and Shenzhen Bay handle the same volume more comfortably because more lanes are open. Heung Yuen Wai is newest and quietest, precisely because fewer people know to use it yet.
