Futian port (Lok Ma Chau Spur Line): hours, access, what it connects to

Use this port if you're boarding the East Rail Line at Kowloon Tong, Mong Kok East, or Hung Hom: Lok Ma Chau is one stop earlier than Lo Wu, same train, and it drops you straight into Shenzhen's Futian district with none of the Lo Wu scrum. Skip it if your trip runs past 22:30, since this crossing closes for the night while Huanggang, a short bus ride away, never does.

hours and how you get there

The crossing runs 06:30 to 22:30 daily, on both the Hong Kong side (Lok Ma Chau control point) and the Shenzhen side (Futian Checkpoint). That's not 24 hours, so if you're catching a late flight out of Shenzhen Bao'an or coming back from a night out, this isn't your port. Huanggang, a short bus ride away, is the only one of the five crossings that never closes. If your schedule is tight, run it through the border crossing picker before you commit to a plan built around Futian's closing time.

Getting there is the whole appeal. You take the East Rail Line, which splits after Sheung Shui into the branch that continues to Lo Wu and the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line that peels off toward the border. No bus, no coach booking, no standing on a pavement flagging down the right minibus. You get off the train, clear Hong Kong immigration in the same building, and walk.

the handoff: one covered walkway, no bus involved

This is the bit that makes Futian genuinely the easiest first crossing to try. After Hong Kong immigration at Lok Ma Chau station, you cross a covered footbridge, roughly 240 metres, fitted with moving walkways, straight into the Futian Checkpoint joint inspection building. Clear Shenzhen immigration on the other side and you walk directly down into Futian Checkpoint metro station, the southern terminus of both Shenzhen Metro Line 4 and Line 10.

There's no weather to deal with, no taxi touts, no guessing which exit leads where. Line 4 takes you up through Fumin, Convention & Exhibition Center, and Civic Center, where you can change onto Line 2 if you're heading toward Futian's Shopping Park area (that's also the transfer for the Futian branch of Sam's Club, a few stops further on Line 2). Line 10 fans out toward Shangmeilin and beyond if you're headed further into Longhua.

Futian versus the other crossings, quickly

Those clearance figures move around a lot depending on the day, and I'd treat them as rough shape rather than a promise. What doesn't change is the pattern: Futian's entry side into the mainland is usually quick, and it's the queue back into Hong Kong in the evening that gets long.

crowd patterns worth planning around

Lo Wu is still the busiest of the three main crossings, reportedly clearing something like a quarter of a million people a day on its heaviest days, with Futian close behind in the low 200,000s. That doesn't mean Futian is quiet. It means the worst of it is concentrated at predictable times: weekday mornings around 07:00 to 08:00 and weekday evenings from 20:00 to 22:00 tend to be the calmer windows, while the run-up to closing time and any public holiday morning is when the queue for the footbridge back into Hong Kong stretches out.

If you're doing a same-day supermarket run or a quick Sam's Club trip and you can pick your own hours, aim to cross into Shenzhen mid-morning and come back before 21:00. You'll avoid both the school-holiday crowds and the last-hour crush before the 22:30 cutoff.

paying once you're through

Once you're on the Shenzhen Metro side, your Hong Kong Octopus won't tap onto the turnstile the way it does at home, unless you're carrying one of the dual-wallet Shenzhen-Hong Kong Octopus cards set up for T-Union transit use. For everything else, from the metro fare to a coffee near Civic Center, WeChat Pay HK or Alipay HK linked to a Hong Kong card will get you through almost anywhere now. Worth knowing too: MTR has been running a Futian Fare Saver promotion (27 April to 30 September 2026) that shaves a few dollars off a same-day round trip through Lok Ma Chau if you tap a registered Octopus at the reader inside Futian Checkpoint station. Check the terms on MTR's site before you rely on it, since eligibility details for these promotions tend to shift.

If you only remember one thing about this crossing: Futian rewards people who cross before 21:00 and punishes anyone who leaves it until the last half hour before the 22:30 gate closes.
