Crossing between Shenzhen and Hong Kong late at night

Most bad nights at the border start the same way: dinner ran long, the queue at Futian looked fine, and then the Spur Line shut at 10:30 pm with you on the wrong side of it. The fix is not complicated, but it depends on knowing which door is still open, which train is the last one, and what actually runs from the one crossing that never closes. This page puts the closing times, the last trains and the overnight transport in one place, with the official source for each.

What time does each Shenzhen crossing close?

The Immigration Department's control point table is the only list that counts, and it was unchanged when we checked on 26 September 2026. For passengers crossing to or from Shenzhen, it says:

Two lines on that table confuse people. Shenzhen Bay lists 24 hours too, but only for goods vehicles; passengers stop at midnight. And the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is also 24 hours, but it goes to Zhuhai and Macao, not Shenzhen. For a Shenzhen night, there is one answer after midnight, and it is Lok Ma Chau.

Closing time is when clearance stops, not when you should arrive. On a busy Sunday a queue that looks short at 10:15 pm at the Spur Line can still leave you outside at 10:30. The queue timing guide has the pattern by day of the week; the short version is that the last hour before any closing time is the worst hour to test your luck.

What time is the last MTR train from Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau?

Clearing immigration is only half of it. If you come back through a rail crossing, you still need a train. The MTR's service hours search gives these East Rail Line times, checked on 26 September 2026:

The MTR adds a rule that matters at this hour: you may not pass the entry gates less than 5 minutes before the scheduled last train. So a midnight clearance at Lo Wu can still catch the 00:30 to Hung Hom, but it will not catch the midnight train to Admiralty. If you are going to Hong Kong Island after about 11:30 pm, the Hung Hom train and a change there is the realistic plan, or a taxi from Sheung Shui.

The Spur Line is tighter than people expect. Clearance closes at 10:30 pm and the last train out of Lok Ma Chau station is 22:55, so the Futian route is fine for a normal evening. It is useless after about 10:15 pm.

I missed the Spur Line at Futian. What now?

You have two doors left, and the choice depends on the time.

• Before about 11:15 pm: go to Luohu and cross at Lo Wu, which clears until midnight and has the last trains above. From Futian Port that is a short taxi or Didi ride across town. Leave margin: the Lo Wu hall at 11:45 pm on a Sunday is not quiet.
• Later than that, or if Lo Wu looks bad: go to Huanggang. It is the 24-hour crossing, and on the Shenzhen side it is close to Futian. Huanggang Checkpoint station is on Shenzhen Metro Line 7, but late at night a taxi is the dependable way there.

Do not walk to the Spur Line building hoping it reopens. The Futian crossing and the Huanggang crossing share the Lok Ma Chau name on the Hong Kong side, and they are different buildings. The Spur Line is the MTR one. Plain Lok Ma Chau is the road one, and it is the one that never shuts.

How does the Huanggang crossing work after midnight?

Until the new port opens, a Huanggang crossing is two clearances with a bus ride in between. Coming home, you clear Shenzhen at Huanggang, board the Lok Ma Chau to Huanggang shuttle, the yellow bus that locals call the Huang Bus, and clear Hong Kong at the Lok Ma Chau Control Point.

The Transport Department's Lok Ma Chau page gives the shuttle's night pattern:

• Hours: 24 hours, run by New Hong Kong Bus Company.
• Frequency: every 5 to 15 minutes from 6:30 am to midnight, every 10 to 15 minutes from midnight to 6:30 am.
• Fare: HK$10 for a single journey.
• Hong Kong terminus: the Lok Ma Chau (San Tin) Public Transport Interchange.

So even at 3 am you should not wait long for the shuttle. What takes the time at night is not the bus but the two queues, and at that hour they are usually short. Carry both your identity card and a valid Home Return Permit, as always. If you are enrolled, e-Channel works on the Hong Kong side at night as it does by day.

How do I get home from Lok Ma Chau after midnight?

This is the part that catches people. There is no MTR at the Lok Ma Chau Control Point, and the East Rail Line has stopped anyway. The Transport Department lists these services at the control point from 11 pm to 6:30 am the next morning:

The same page lists short-haul cross-boundary coaches to Mong Kok, Jordan (Austin Road), Lam Tin, Wan Chai and Tsuen Wan, and marks the Tsuen Wan route, with its stop at Nan Fung, as the overnight one. Coaches carry you through both checkpoints without changing, which is the easiest option of all if the timing works, but book or check with the operator before relying on one at 2 am. The Kam Tin coach route is listed as suspended.

If you live on Hong Kong Island or in East Kowloon, the honest answer at 2 am is a red taxi from the rank, or 616S to Mong Kok and a taxi from there. Either way, have an Octopus or cash ready: the minibuses take Octopus, and a taxi from the border to the Island is a long meter.

What about crossing early in the morning?

The same logic runs in reverse. Every crossing except Lok Ma Chau opens at 6:30 am or later, and the first train from Lok Ma Chau station is not until 06:38. If you need to be in Shenzhen before 6:30 am, for a flight from Bao'an or an early hospital appointment, the options are the 24-hour Huanggang crossing or a cross-boundary coach that runs overnight.

Getting to Lok Ma Chau before dawn is the same problem as getting home from it after midnight: the minibuses and taxis above run until 6:30 am, and they run in both directions. A red taxi to the control point, then the shuttle across, is the most predictable way to be in Huanggang at 5 am.

On the Shenzhen side, the Metro does not run all night, so if you arrive before the first trains you will need a taxi or Didi. The Shenzhen metro guide has the lines around each port; check first and last train times in the operator's app before you rely on them.

What changes when the new Huanggang Port opens?

The rebuilt Huanggang Port is finished but not open. The Standard reported a target of Monday 12 October, and the government says the fourth quarter of 2026. Nothing newer had been announced on 26 September. When it does open, three things change for a late-night crossing:

• One queue, no shuttle. Both immigration checks happen in one building on the Shenzhen side. The HK$10 shuttle bus is no longer needed, and buses and minibuses set down at the new port's own interchange.
• A night bus. The Transport Department's new-port transport page adds KMB's overnight route NB73, via the San Tin interchange, Sheung Shui Station and Tai Po to Sha Tin Town Centre, at $22.6.
• The same three minibuses, with posted fares. The page lists 79S to Tin Shui Wai at $14.6, 616S to Mong Kok at $28.5, and N44B to Tuen Mun Ferry Pier at $15.7, rising to $21.7 from midnight to 6:30 am.

The government's news.gov.hk summary confirms the port runs 24 hours and names NB73 as the route for late-night travellers. The new port also keeps the taxis and the short-haul coaches. What it does not have is a train, and nothing announced changes the Spur Line's 10:30 pm close.

What goes wrong at night, and how to avoid it

• Your phone dies. Payment, Didi and your route home all live on it. Carry a charged power bank on any trip that might run late, and see our payments guide for a backup.
• No data after the border. Booking a Didi to Huanggang needs mobile data on the Shenzhen side. Sort out a data plan or eSIM before you need it.
• Trusting a screenshot of old hours. Opening hours have changed over the years. The ImmD table is the source; group-chat screenshots are not.
• Holiday nights. On Golden Week and long weekends, Sunday night queues can run close to closing time at every rail crossing. The holiday crossing page has this year's busy days.
• Heavy shopping. A taxi driver may take a trolley's worth of bags; a minibus at 1 am may not have the room. If you have been to Sam's, plan the car, not the minibus, and read the luggage rules for the coaches.
