The crossing

Ferry or a land crossing

Updated 6 September 2026

Guay means 过 — to cross. A ferry is still a crossing. It is not automatically the clever one.

When the pier is the point

You live on Hong Kong Island or Kowloon West, you want Shekou or the western Nanshan waterfront, and you would rather sit on water than change at Sha Tin. The operator, not this site, owns the day’s sailings. ImmD lists passenger ferry control points separately from Lo Wu.

When to stay on land

Futian Sam's is a Spur Line walk. Luohu is Lo Wu. Longgang is rarely a ferry story. Shenzhen Bay already aims you at Nanshan if you are coming from Tuen Mun or Yuen Long. Use Sam's by store before you book a boat to feel cosmopolitan.

Luggage

A ferry has a bag rule the land hall does not. If you are doing a warehouse run, the trolley belongs on a bus or the metro, not in a cabin. See cross-border bus luggage.

Quick answers

Is the ferry faster to Qianhai Sam's?
Sometimes, if you are already on Hong Kong Island and hate the East Rail. Sometimes not. Count door-to-door, not romance.
Do I still need the Home Return Permit?
Yes.
Does GuayHK sell tickets?
No. We will not embed a fare we cannot keep current.

Hours, fares, and rules move. Check ImmD, C&ED, or the operator the morning you travel.
