Shenzhen coach booking: how HK walk ups buy in Oct 2026

Updated 22 October 2026

Two counter windows, one mini program and zero working third party apps: that is the realistic booking map for an HK walk up wanting a Shenzhen coach in late October 2026. Which option you should pick depends on which terminal you leave from, what time of day you are travelling, and whether you already have a Mainland payment method linked to your phone.

Where the counter windows actually are

The coach map out of Hong Kong has been thinned out enough that the booking question is really a counter question. Two physical windows still issue a fixed seat to walk up passengers in late October 2026, and the rest of the trade has moved into a WeChat mini program run by the operator of the B12 and the B3X.

The first window is at the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macao Bridge Hong Kong Port, on level three of the coach hall, next to the Long Win Customer Service desk. It opens at 06:30 and closes when the last B12 departure pushes back, which in October 2026 is 22:30 to Huanggang Port and 23:15 to Shenzhen Bay. The window takes Octopus for fares under 200 HKD and the standard Mainland rail co payment app for everything above that. Cash HKD is still accepted, but the change comes back in coins and the queue to count them is long after 19:00.

The second window is at the China Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui, on the upper coach deck next to the Shenzhen airport coach bay. It opens one hour before the first coach and closes at the time of the last coach, which is 21:30 to Futian and 22:00 to Bao'an airport via the western corridor. This window is the last place in Kowloon where you can buy a fixed seat to Shenzhen Bay with a credit card that was issued outside Mainland China, because the in coach terminals that used to handle cards have been removed during the September 2026 refurbishment.

Every other physical desk, including the one that used to sit at the Elements mall basement and the one at the old Hung Hom cross border coach hall, has been closed since the second quarter of 2026. If you turn up there you will find a poster redirecting you to either the HZMB Hong Kong Port or the mini program.

What an HK walk up actually pays on the day

Walk up fares in late October 2026 are unchanged from the schedule that came in on 1 September 2026, because the operator froze the table through Chinese National Day. The number you see on the board at the window is the number you pay, with no booking fee layered on top.

B12 from HZMB Hong Kong Port to Huanggang Port is 45 HKD paid in HKD at the window, or 41 RMB if you pay through the mini program with a Mainland wallet. B3X from HZMB Hong Kong Port to Shenzhen Bay is 55 HKD at the window or 50 RMB in the mini program. The airport coach from China Ferry Terminal to Bao'an is 130 HKD at the window or 118 RMB in the mini program. The Futian coach from China Ferry Terminal is 100 HKD at the window or 91 RMB in the mini program. None of these fares include the port levy, which is 10 RMB per direction and is collected on the Mainland side at the e gate.

Day of week matters. Friday and Sunday evenings carry a 5 HKD surcharge between 18:00 and 22:00 on the B12 and B3X, and the surcharge is shown as a separate line on the receipt rather than folded into the headline price. National Day week itself is over by the time you read this, but the late October Golden Week spillover for the Hung Hom firecracker show still runs at the same surcharge on the evening of 24 October and the morning of 25 October.

If you hold a Hong Kong student card or a senior card, the window applies the discount before you pay, and the mini program applies it automatically when you register the card number in the profile tab. Foreign passports do not get a discount, but they do get a printed receipt with a 6 percent Mainland VAT line that the Futian tax refund machine reads, so hold on to it.

The mini program that has replaced most third party apps

Every third party booking app that used to sell Shenzhen coaches out of Hong Kong has been pulled from the local stores or has lost Mainland payment rail access since the start of 2026. Trip com, the old KKday widget, the Klook coach module and the red market on Telegram all returned errors or blanked out the coach tab when tested from Hong Kong in the second week of October 2026. The only app that still books a real seat in 2026 is a WeChat mini program run by the same operator that runs the B12 and the B3X, and the official name in English on the splash screen is HZMB Cross Border Coach.

To use the mini program you need a WeChat account that is older than 30 days, a phone number that can receive an SMS in either Hong Kong or Mainland China, and either a Mainland bank card or a Hong Kong bank card that has been linked to a WeChat Pay HK wallet. Account creation is in English on the first screen and switches to simplified Chinese as soon as you tap the booking tab, so it helps to have the name of the destination port written down in hanzi before you start.

The mini program releases seats 7 days ahead at 00:00 Mainland time, which is midnight Hong Kong time. The 18:00 to 22:00 departures on Friday and Sunday fill in the first hour, and the 06:30 to 08:00 departures on Saturday fill in the first 90 minutes. Mid morning and mid afternoon on weekdays are easy to get the day before. Late night departures past 22:00 are only sold at the window because the operator wants staff to check the ID and the route declaration on the spot.

Refund logic in the mini program is the part most HK walk ups trip on. Cancellations made more than 2 hours before departure refund 90 percent of the fare to the same wallet, cancellations made between 2 hours and 30 minutes before departure refund 50 percent, and cancellations made inside 30 minutes do not refund at all. The 10 percent retention covers the port slot fee that the operator has already paid to the port authority, and the policy is printed on the booking confirmation page rather than the splash screen, so most first time users miss it.

If the mini program is the only way you can pay because you do not have a Mainland wallet, plan to book 3 to 7 days ahead for a Friday or Sunday evening seat, and accept that a walk up on the day itself will mean a queue of 15 to 30 minutes at the HZMB window between 18:00 and 20:00. The China Ferry Terminal window moves faster, usually under 10 minutes, because the airport coach has fewer stops and the staff are used to a more compact timetable.

Which option to pick for the four common trips

Trip one, Kowloon to Shenzhen Bay on a Tuesday morning for a meeting: book the B3X through the mini program 3 days ahead, pay with WeChat Pay HK, sit on the left side, and have the port levy ready in cash RMB because the e gate is slower at Shenzhen Bay than at Huanggang in the early morning rush.

Trip two, Hong Kong Island to Bao'an airport for an evening flight: walk up at the China Ferry Terminal counter 90 minutes before departure, pay the 130 HKD window fare with Octopus, and allow an extra 30 minutes on top of the coach time because the western corridor in late October 2026 has a slow lane closure at Shekou that adds 10 minutes in either direction.

Trip three, New Territories to Huanggang for a weekend shopping run: walk up at the HZMB Hong Kong Port counter on the day, take the first B12 that has a green light above the bay, and pay the 45 HKD fare plus the 10 RMB port levy in two separate transactions. The 06:30 first departure is rarely full, the 09:00 second departure is sometimes full on Saturdays, and the 11:00 third departure is always full on Sundays because of the Lo Wu market crowd who have shifted over.

Trip four, returning from a Shenzhen dinner to Hong Kong after 23:00: the HZMB counter closes at 22:30 to Huanggang and 23:15 to Shenzhen Bay, and the China Ferry Terminal closes at 22:00 to Futian, so any return after 23:15 has to be the night coach from the Shenzhen side. The Shenzhen side of the deal is the Luohu coach terminal, and the booking logic on that side is different enough to be its own post.

What still goes wrong and how to dodge it

The most common failure mode in the second half of October 2026 is the Octopus tap limit. The adult Octopus daily cap for cross border coach payment was raised from 1000 HKD to 1500 HKD on 1 October, but the tap limit on a single transaction was held at 500 HKD, so a family of four paying the Sunday surcharge on the B3X needs two taps at the window. The window staff know this and will wave you through, but the queue behind you will not, so have the fares split before you step up.

The second most common failure is the Mainland ID check. The mini program asks for the travel document number at booking, and the operator audits the document against the booking on roughly one in ten departures in late October 2026. If the document number on the booking does not match the one on the document in your hand, the driver will ask you to step off and rebook at the window, which means losing 30 minutes and the fare. Foreign passport holders should screenshot the booking confirmation and carry the physical passport, because the WeChat profile photo is not accepted as ID at the coach door.

The third is the port levy. The levy is collected on the Mainland side at the e gate, and the machine will only take a face scan if you have a Mainland SIM or eSIM with a Mainland roaming line. Hong Kong eSIMs do not register on the e gate network in late October 2026, so either pay the 10 RMB in cash or queue at the manual booth on the left of the gate. The manual booth accepts 20 and 50 RMB notes, and gives change in 1 RMB coins.

The fourth is the late night closure. If your flight into Bao'an lands after 22:00 Mainland time, the airport coach from China Ferry Terminal is already gone, and the Shenzhen side coach that the airport operator runs to the HZMB does not accept Hong Kong issued payment for the last two trips. The honest answer is to book a hotel near the airport for that one night and cross the next morning, because the saving on a Shenzhen hotel room is larger than the saving on a late night coach ticket once you add the airport transfer.

Quick answers

Can I still book a Shenzhen coach from Hong Kong with a credit card in Oct 2026?
Yes, but only at the China Ferry Terminal upper coach deck counter, and only for the Futian and Bao'an airport coaches. The HZMB Hong Kong Port counter takes Octopus and WeChat Pay HK, not foreign issued cards.
Why does the mini program show Chinese when I open it?
The booking tab of the HZMB Cross Border Coach mini program is in simplified Chinese. The splash screen and the wallet tab are bilingual, but the seat map and the refund policy are in Chinese only, so write the destination port in hanzi before you start.
Is the B12 still running from HZMB Hong Kong Port to Huanggang in late Oct 2026?
Yes, first departure 06:30, last departure 22:30, every 20 to 30 minutes. The B3X to Shenzhen Bay shares the same counter and the same timetable, with the last departure at 23:15.
Can a foreign passport holder buy at the window on the day?
Yes, both windows accept a foreign passport as ID for a walk up. You will not get the HK student or senior discount, but you do get a printed receipt with the VAT line for the Futian tax refund machine.
