Crossing

Shenzhen ferry from Hong Kong in Oct 2026

Updated 6 October 2026

Two real ferry options and one rumour. Pick by destination, not by price.

Two ports, two very different trips

The Shenzhen ferry map from Hong Kong is shorter than people think. There is Shekou for central Shenzhen, there is Fuyong for the airport, and there is not much else running in Oct 2026. A third line, the long talked about route to the eastern coast, is still on the drawing board as of early October.

Shekou is the workhorse. TurboJET and Chu Kong run catamarans from the Hong Kong China Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui to Shekou Cruise Home Port throughout the day. The crossing is around thirty minutes. The catch is the terminal, not the sea. Hong Kong China Ferry Terminal is its own little bureaucracy: you clear Hong Kong outbound, board the boat, then clear mainland immigration on arrival at Shekou. Total door to door from TST to Houhai is about ninety minutes on a good run.

Fuyong is the airport play. SkyPier runs ferries from the Hong Kong International Airport SkyPier directly into Fuyong Ferry Terminal, which is attached to Shenzhen Bao'an Airport. No mainland transit, no second immigration hall, no Shenzhen metro needed at the end. If your final destination is anywhere in western Shenzhen or you are connecting onwards, this is the cleanest crossing in the bay.

Shekou timetable, Oct 2026

TurboJET is running roughly hourly from 0730 to 1900 Hong Kong time out of China Ferry Terminal, with extra sailings on Friday and Sunday afternoons. First boat 0730, last useful evening sailing 1930. Adult fare HKD 160 one way at the counter, HKD 145 on the app if you book twenty four hours ahead. The 1945 sailing exists on paper but is usually cancelled outside peak season, and a friend was bumped off it on 04 Oct without a refund slip, so treat it as aspirational.

Chu Kong runs a tighter window: 0900, 1100, 1430, 1700, with a 2000 on Fridays only. Cheaper at HKD 130, slower catamaran, and the seats are softer. Chu Kong is the pick if you want a quiet crossing and do not mind a fixed slot. Both operators accept Octopus at the counter, which is a small miracle given the rest of the cashless story on the Shenzhen side.

Shekou Cruise Home Port itself reopened its revamped arrivals hall in September 2026, so the old complaints about a single chokepoint escalator are now historic. New e-gates for Home Return Permit holders shaved about ten minutes off the mainland side in our test on Saturday.

Fuyong, only for airport business

SkyPier to Fuyong is not a tourist crossing. It is a connector for people flying into Hong Kong and out of Shenzhen Bao'an, or for Shenzhen residents transiting via HKG. The October 2026 timetable is roughly 0700 to 2130 with three or four sailings per hour at the peaks, thinning to hourly in the middle of the day. Adult fare HKD 305 if booked in advance, HKD 360 walk in.

Two rules. First, you need a through check in to a Shenzhen flight from Hong Kong, or you need to be a ticketed passenger on an outbound Shenzhen flight, to use SkyPier. The ferry desk will scan your boarding pass. Second, mainland immigration is done at Fuyong, which is fine for Home Return Permit holders but slower for foreigners because there are fewer e-gates.

If you are heading to the airport but not flying out, take a coach. The Fuyong ferry is the wrong tool. The Shekou to Bao'an coach is HKD 80 and the door to door time is similar.

The rumour: an east coast line

Since the start of the year there has been talk of a new ferry from Hong Kong to Dapeng or to a pier near Xichong, aimed at hikers and beach trippers. As of 06 Oct 2026 nothing is bookable and the Dapeng peninsula is still road only. If you want the beaches, the realistic route is the high speed rail to Pingshan then a DiDi, which is slow but it works.

There is also persistent chatter about a night ferry to Shekou. It is not running. TurboJET trialled a 2230 sailing in the summer and pulled it in late September. If you need a late crossing, the night coach from Jordan remains the only real option after 2100.

What it costs and what it does not

Ferry is not the cheapest crossing. Shekou on TurboJET walk up is HKD 160, which is more than the HKD 45 Huanggang bus and more than the HKD 86 high speed rail from West Kowloon. What you are paying for is the lack of a queue at a land border and, in the Fuyong case, a direct attachment to a terminal you actually need.

There is no departure tax refund trick on the ferry. You paid the fare in Hong Kong dollars and that is the end of it. Mainland spend is a separate question.

Insider detail: TurboJET and Chu Kong fares to Shekou are the same whether you hold a Home Return Permit or a foreign passport. The HKD 145 app fare is only available to people who set up a TurboJET account, which requires a Hong Kong or mainland mobile. We have filed a complaint that the app insists on SMS verification from a +852 number and will update if it changes.

Who should take the ferry

The ferry is for you if any of the following is true. You are ending up in Nanshan, Houhai, or Sea World and you do not want to mess with the Shenzhen Bay land crossing. You are connecting at Bao'an airport and you have a through checked bag. You are travelling with luggage that the coach drivers will sigh at. You are a foreigner who finds the e-gates at Huanggang stressful and would rather queue once in Shekou's new hall.

The ferry is not for you if your destination is Luohu or Futian, if you are on a budget, or if you are on a clock. The last useful Shekou sailing lands you at Shekou at 2000, which is the same time you could be walking out of Futian via Huanggang for a tenth of the price. For pure speed and price the HSR still wins.

Booking and what to do on the day

Book TurboJET on the app for the HKD 15 discount, or walk up. Counter queues at China Ferry Terminal on a Sunday morning in October are about fifteen minutes. If you are travelling on Golden Week day one, three, or seven, turn up ninety minutes early. The mainland immigration hall at Shekou, despite the upgrade, is the bottleneck.

Bring your Home Return Permit. Foreigners need a valid mainland visa or a visa free entry stub. Octopus works at both ferry counters. AlipayHK and WeChat Pay do not work at the Hong Kong side but work fine at the Shekou arrivals taxi rank. There is free wifi on the boats and patchy wifi in the Shekou terminal.

One last thing. The ferry is the only Hong Kong to Shenzhen crossing where you can drink a hot coffee and look at the harbour at the same time. That is not a small thing on a Monday morning.

Quick answers

Is the Shenzhen ferry running on 06 Oct 2026?
Yes. TurboJET and Chu Kong are both running normal timetables to Shekou from Hong Kong China Ferry Terminal, and SkyPier ferries to Fuyong are running on the standard airport connector schedule.
Which is cheaper, ferry or high speed rail?
High speed rail from West Kowloon to Futian is HKD 86 and takes fourteen minutes. The Shekou ferry walk up is HKD 160 and takes thirty minutes plus terminal time. For pure cost and speed the HSR wins.
Can I use Octopus on the Shenzhen ferry?
Yes, Octopus is accepted at the TurboJET and Chu Kong counters at Hong Kong China Ferry Terminal, which is one of the last places in the cross border ecosystem where the card still works without an app.

Hours in the cards follow the Hong Kong Immigration Department control-point table. They move. Check the morning you travel.
